Try to remember; it's
a word processor, not a typewriter
You may or may not recall that word
processing has it's roots in typewriting. Rules for
typewriting a document were many and very strict.
Now, times have changed and typewriters
are used primarily for specific tasks and word processors do the bulk
of paper writing for both students and professionals. The word
processor comes in many forms and can operate on different platforms
(PC and MAC). Though the platforms may change most of the
basics remain constant.
Basic Rules for
Word-processing:
- When typing to the end of a line, allow the
word processor to move your cursor down to the next
line.
- Do not hit the Return/Enter key until you need
a new paragraph.
- There is only one space between
words.
- There is only one space after a comma and
semicolon.
- There are one or two spaces allowed after a
period or colon.
- When performing a center justification, the
center justify tool is used, NOT SPACES!
- When performing a right justification, the
right justify tool is used, NOT SPACES!
- Tabs are used to line up information on a
page, NOT SPACES!
- NEVER TYPE IN ALL
CAPITALS!!!
Now that you know the rules you can properly
format and type your papers with confidence.
